RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, geology and the other earth sciences are fundamental to the safety,
health, welfare, and environmental security of Ohioans and to the economy of
Ohio; and
WHEREAS, the earth sciences are integral to finding, developing, and conserving mineral, energy, agriculture and water resources needed for Ohio's continuing prosperity; and
WHEREAS, the earth sciences provide the basis for preparing for and mitigating natural hazards such as floods, landslides, earthquakes, droughts, sinkholes, indoor radon and mine subsidence experienced periodically in Ohio; and
WHEREAS, the earth sciences are crucial to environmental and ecological issues ranging from water and air quality to waste management and land-use decisions made in Ohio; and
WHEREAS, the earth sciences contribute critical parts of our understanding and appreciation of, and our respect for Nature;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE V. VOINOVICH, Governor of the State of Ohio, do hereby designate OCTOBER 11-17, 1998 as
EARTH SCIENCE WEEK
throughout the State of Ohio and ask that all citizens take this opportunity to recognize the importance of "Earth Sciences" to our state.
