Governor of the State of California
WHEREAS, earth science is the study of the origin, structure and physical phenomena of the earth; and
WHEREAS, earth sciences and the development of mineral resources are fundamental to the health, safety, welfare and economy of this Great State; and
WHEREAS, understanding earth sciences can help Californians prepare for natural events such as earthquakes, erosion and landslides, and help lessen some of their disastrous effects; and
WHEREAS, during Earth Science Week 1999 variety of state and national organizations will be using this opportunity to increase education and awareness about earth sciences;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gray Davis, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim October 8-14, 2000 as "Earth Science Week."
