Executive Proclamation

State of South Dakota

Office of the Governor

WHEREAS, Geology and the other earth sciences are fundamental to the safety, health, and welfare of  South Dakotans and to the economy of South Dakota; and,

WHEREAS, The earth sciences are integral to finding, developing, and protecting water, mineral, and  energy resources needed for South Dakota's prosperity; and,

WHEREAS, The earth sciences provide the basis for preparing for and mitigating natural hazards such as floods, droughts, expansive soils, landslides, and sinkholes experienced in South Dakota; and,

WHEREAS, The earth sciences are crucial to environmental issues ranging from water and air quality to waste disposal; and,

WHEREAS, An understanding of the earth sciences is vital to land management and land use decisions made in South Dakota; and,

WHEREAS, The earth sciences contribute critical pieces to our understanding and appreciation of, and our respect for nature:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, WILLIAM J. JANKLOW, Governor of the State of South Dakota, do hereby proclaim the second full week of October henceforth be designated as

EARTH SCIENCE WEEK

 in South Dakota.

 IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused to be affixed the Great Seal of the State of South Dakota, in Pierre, the Capital City, this Fifteenth Day of July in the Year of Our Lord, Nineteen Hundred and Ninety-eight.
