| EARTH SCIENCE WEEK October 13-19, 2002 |
|
| WHEREAS, | Geology and the other earth sciences are fundamental to health, safety and welfare of Marylanders and to the economy of Maryland... and, the earth sciences are integral to conserving, finding, and developing water, mineral, and energy resources needed for society's continued prosperity and well-being; and |
| WHEREAS, | The earth sciences provide the basis for preparing for and mitigating natural hazards such as floods, landslides, earthquakes, drought, and shoreline erosion... and, the earth sciences are crucial to environmental and ecological issues ranging from water and air quality to waste disposal; and |
| WHEREAS, | Geological factors of resources, hazards, and environments are vital to land management and land use in Maryland; and |
| WHEREAS, | The earth sciences contribute critical pieces to our understanding of, and respect for, Maryland's heritage and natural systems. |
| NOW, THEREFORE, I,PARRIS N. GLENDENING, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF MARYLAND, | |
| do hereby proclaim October 13-19, 2002 as EARTH SCIENCE WEEK in Maryland, and do commend this observance to all of our citizens. | |
