In addition to sponsoring Earth Science Week, the United
States Geological Survey (USGS) takes an active role in International Polar
Year (IPY) 2007-2008. IPY is a global scientific
effort to gain understanding of the polar regions. Participation
allows the USGS to unite with the global polar research community. Together
they are able to educate the public about the importance of understanding
the polar regions and its impact on the world today.
