2023 Contest Winners
Photography Contest
Shamim Al-Noor of Gazipur, Bangladesh, won first place in the photo contest with “Golden Fiber Processing,” an image captured in Jamalpur, Bangladesh, of people harvesting a natural, eco-friendly, versatile fiber called “jute”.
Submissions illustrated the theme “Innovation Right Here.”

Visual Art Contest
ESW 2023 Contest Visual Art Winner (Aydin Soner)
Aydin Soner of Columbia, SC, won first place in the visual arts contest with their colorful, artistic depiction of several ways Earth science-related technological innovations interact with the earth.
Students in grades K-5 made two-dimensional artworks illustrating the theme “Earth Science Innovations.”

Essay Contest
Donovan Fish of Guyton, GA, won first place in the essay contest with their paper examining examples of remote sensing technologies and how they find them to be making the world a better place.
Students in grades 6-9 wrote essays of up to 300 words addressing how new technologies and practices — affecting the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere — solve problems and create healthier, more sustainable communities.

Video Contest
Toby Leng of Manhasset, NY, won first place in the video contest with their entry “Ferrofluid: Revolutionizing the Battle Against Plastic Pollution,” which aims to reveal the dangers of microplastics, that affect even the most normal parts of our life, and by utilizing alternative solutions, such as ferrofluids, we can cut down on the microplastic in our oceans and other large bodies of water.
