AGI is sponsoring a photography contest to celebrate Earth Science Week 2023. The photography theme for this year is: “Innovation Right Here.”

Contest Guidelines

Who can enter?

The photography contest is open to interested persons of any age. *You must be a resident of the United States or an international member of an AGI Member Society or an AGI International Associate Society to enter.

Must be original, unpublished work

Entries must be composed of original, authentic, unpublished material and must be the sole property of the entrant, not previously submitted to any other contest. Published material includes that which has been posted on the World Wide Web. This includes, but is not limited to, Facebook, or any other social network Website where photos have been posted and shared.

What is the subject of the photograph?

Your photograph should focus on the topic "Innovation Right Here."

Geoscience innovations are all around us. They shape the ways we interact with the Earth, water, atmosphere, and other living things, often right in our own back yards. How are the geosciences exploring new technologies or practices where you live? Use your camera to capture an image that shows how geoscience innovation is improving life in your community.

What do I need to submit?

The photography contest is limited to one submission per entrant. A valid submission will contain the following information:

1. One photograph focusing on the topic "Innovation Right Here.” Each photograph must be original, authentic, unpublished, taken or created by the entrant, the sole property and work of the entrant, and not previously submitted in any other contest.

2. Your personal information and a brief one- to two-sentence caption in English explaining your entry. This information should be sent in an email along with your photograph:

First and last name
Address (street, city, state, postal code, country)
Telephone number
E-mail address
Caption explaining your entry (exact location featured in entry photo, natural feature displayed in photo, when photo was taken)

3. A completed and signed entry form. Print out the entry form here and mail it to us or submit your entry form electronically by emailing it to Entries cannot be accepted without a signed entry form. NOTE: If a person under the age of 18 appears in the photograph, the parental consent line on the entry form must be signed by the child's parent or guardian.

How should I submit my photograph and form(s)?

Submissions must be submitted electronically as a JPEG, TIFF, PNG, or GIF file. Electronic files must be at least 300 dpi (or 1500 x 1500 pixels). Electronic submissions must be sent to with the subject heading as "ESW 2023 Photography Contest."

Entry forms may be submitted electronically, by mail, or by fax. Fill out your form, including the signature of a parent or guardian. Electronically submitted entry forms must be scanned and sent, along with photographs, to with the subject heading as "ESW 2023 Photography Contest."

IMPORTANT: You must submit a completed and signed entry form. You may mail the form separately to the address above, or scan the completed form and send it electronically along with your photograph. If you mail the entry form separately, please indicate the date when you sent your photograph electronically. No submission without an entry form will be considered.

When is the deadline?

All eligible submissions must be received electronically by 5 p.m. ET, Friday, October 13, 2023.

Entry forms may be submitted electronically or by mail. The deadline for emailing your entry form is 5 p.m. ET, Friday, October 13, 2023. Mailed entry forms must be postmarked no later than October 13, 2023.

How will the photographs be judged?

The photographs will be judged by a panel of geoscientists on creativity and relevance to and incorporation of the topic.

What are the prizes?

The selected entry will win $300 and a copy of an AGI publication. The winner's and finalists' names and entries will be posted to the Earth Science Week website. No cash substitution for prizes will be permitted, and prizes are nontransferable.


Additional Rules: By submitting an entry, an entrant represents that the photograph is an original work, and the entrant is the sole owner of all rights to the photograph. An entrant also agrees to allow the American Geosciences Institute to use his or her name to post on the AGI web site, without compensation unless prohibited.  Each entrant retains his or her rights to their photograph but grants to AGI a royalty-free, world-wide, perpetual, non-exclusive license to publicly display, distribute, reproduce and create derivative works of the photograph, in whole or in part, in any media now existing or later developed, for any AGI purpose, including, but not limited to, advertising and promotion. AGI will not be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such uses. The American Geosciences Institute, its agents and contractor, are not responsible for lost, late, misdirected, incomplete, or postage-due entries. Contest void where prohibited or restricted by law. AGI reserves the right to cancel the contest or modify these rules at its discretion. Decisions of AGI are final and binding.
