Alaska

Executive Proclamation

by

Tony Knowles, Governor

Geology and the other earth sciences are fundamental to the safety, health, and welfare of Alaska and its residents. Alaskans are highly dependent on a healthy environment for their livelihoods. The earth sciences are integral in finding, developing, and conserving mineral, energy, and water resources needed for Alaska’s continuing prosperity.

The earth sciences provide the basis which helps prevent and prepare for the natural hazards such as earthquakes, floods, and landslides which Alaska may experience from time to time.

Our vast, unspoiled state has been spared environmental damage found so abundantly elsewhere. The earth sciences are crucial to ecological issues ranging from water and air quality to waste disposal. The earth sciences help protect our natural resources.

The earth sciences contribute directly to our understanding, appreciation, and respect for nature.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Tony Knowles, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim the second full week of October as:

Earth Science Week

in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to recognize the importance of these sciences to our commitment to protecting the earth.

DATED: June 4, 1999
