Spotlighting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
As part of AGI’s ongoing Geoscience for Sustainability initiative, this year’s celebration relates earth science to sustainability initiatives by focusing attention on the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Each SDG outlines how global issues such as energy, climate change, the environment, natural hazards, agriculture, industry, and economic opportunity can be addressed for a more sustainable world. Aligning educational activities to the SDGs connects student learning to real-world problems and potential solutions. Many activities in the ESW Toolkit are linked to specific SDGs to which they most closely relate to help promote understanding of the vital role that earth science plays in informing, maintaining, and strengthening sustainability.
Celebrating Earth Science Week All Year Round
AGI has many resources to help you celebrate and learn more about earth science all year round. Check out the monthly activities created by our ESW partners in the 2024-2025 ESW Calendar:
-
The August activity is from Earth Observations for the Sustainable Development Goals (EO4SDG) in conjunction with the Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP). This activity is designed to introduce students to the SDGs by having them use the GLOBE Observer app to collect data on land cover, then make connections with how Earth observation data can be used to monitor progress being made toward the SDGs, specifically SDG 15: Life on land.
-
The August calendar page also links to a Geoscientists without Borders® project done by college students in Southeast Asia who studied groundwater and earthquake risk in the area. This project can be used to introduce younger students to the process of science, and links with an activity from the National Association of Geoscience Teachers, as well as SDG 4: Quality education and SDG 6: Clean water and sanitation.
-
Did you know August is National Water Quality Month? Use the ESW Online Toolkit to access posters, games, and other resources from “ESW 2021: Water Today and for the Future” to use throughout the month.
