ESW Toolkits are being shipped!

Be on the lookout for your 2024 ESW Toolkit in the mail. On the 2024 ESW webpage, you will find additional resources to support your use of the toolkit. Our Online Toolkit also houses electronic versions of some of the ESW Toolkit materials, in addition to others not included in the Toolkit.

Earth Science Week Contests

Each year, AGI offers four Earth Science Week (ESW) contests. All contest submissions are due by 8 PM Eastern Time, on the Friday of ESW, October 18, 2024. Visit each contest’s webpage for more information on eligibility and themes:

• Photography (all ages, worldwide)

• Video (all ages, individuals or teams, worldwide)

• Visual Arts (grades K-5, U.S. only)

• Essay (grades 6-9, U.S. only)

 

Celebrate Earth Science Week 2024

Hosting or attending an Earth Science Week event is the perfect way to celebrate the theme “Earth Science Everywhere.” To support your involvement, the ESW website offers:

• Guidance on hosting events,

• Resources that can be used to highlight the theme or ESW Focus Days, and

• Information on past events, from which you can draw inspiration.

 

Other ways to celebrate Earth Science Week include:

• Tuning in to the ESW Webinar Series, airing each day from October 14-18 at 1 PM Eastern Time,

• Ordering an ESW Toolkit, which contains an array of educational resources,

• Collaborating with local geoscientists and geoscience organizations,

• Obtaining a state proclamation for ESW,

• Promoting ESW online and using the hashtag #EarthSciWeek

Celebrating Earth Science Week All Year Round

AGI provides many resources to help you celebrate and learn more about earth science all year round. Check out the monthly activities created by our ESW partners in the 2024-2025 ESW Calendar:

• The September activity, designed for the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, has students conduct an investigation and analyze maps on low-temperature geothermal energy.

• The September calendar page also links to a Geoscientists without Borders® project in which mapping technologies were used to monitor aquatic environments in Zambia. This project can be used in conjunction with a webinar hosted by AGI to introduce students to the use of underwater mapping strategies.

The calendar also highlights earth science-related days and events sponsored by long-time ESW Partners and Sponsors, such as:

• September 14, 2024: International Observe the Moon Night, sponsored by NASA

• September 18, 2024: World Water Monitoring Day, sponsored by the US Geological Survey (USGS)

• September 22-25, 2024: The Geological Society of America (GSA) Connects 2024 in Anaheim, CA.

• Regular registration ends September 5th, but late registration remains open thereafter.

Come see AGI at GSA Connects! We have three presentations:

• Unearthing Geoheritage: Empowering education and outreach about geological settings;

• Enhancing Earth Science Education through Geoscience Professional Engagement: The American Geosciences Institute’s Teacher Field Experience Program; and

• Drilling into Geoscience Education: Scientific Ocean Drilling Lessons Bring Authentic Experiences to Classroom Learning, in conjunction with the International Ocean Discovery Program.
